How my relationship with the Ocean began ....
A cold, grey October Saturday.
Its my 12th Birthday, being celebrated with a day trip to the beach
My siblings are there too, and I remember a birthday cake with a few candles and the customary “Happy Birthday to you” being sung.
We are sitting in our red camper van, which my family calls the dormobile.
The cake is on the table, and the five of us are arranged around it. 🎂
I can’t recall exactly where we are, but it must be somewhere along the remote Norfolk coastline, close to my school.
The weather is uninviting, and there are very few others, if anyone, around.
I leave the van and stand on the pebbles, facing the endless ocean.
The rhythmic pull of the waves, reaching in and withdrawing, speaks to me.
I feel hugged by this sensation, a feeling of belonging and acceptance.
Today, some 40 years on, I live on the Gower coastline. This is my home.
Standing alone, yet sometimes amongst others who amble along the pebbles or sand, I still hear the waves speaking to me as they did when I was a child.
The vast horizon draws me in, making me feel small in comparison to the ocean, yet not insignificant. I feel like I belong.
As an artist, I paint what I see and feel when I walk on the clattering pebbles and the soft, singing sand.
The startling smack of the salty sea air on my face, the curl of the wave reaching in and letting go, influences me as I release my paint onto the canvas.
My brush leaves thin layers and thick, buttery paint marks of rich blues, greens, and purples, in lines and splashes of movement and energy.
The sea, forever rocking, releasing, renewing, and forgiving, with every movement and sound, inspires me to paint with the energy it speaks to me.
